At the fourth dimension of the homicides, Sherman had merely won a ruling that the Winters owed him $300,000 in legal fees, less than he had asked for, for their lawsuit, itself dismissed three months earlier. After telling Bloomberg that he'd been informed he was a "prime suspect" and consulting with his lawyer, Kerry Wintertime allowed that he had not only the motive to kill his cousin simply the opportunity, since he was working at the time as a construction supervisor and could set his own hours.^[17] He admitted to The Fifth Estate that he had imagined killing Sherman only says that he did not, and was watching Peaky Blinders on Netflix, and so attending a Cocaine Anonymous coming together that night.^{[24] [a]}

Ii weeks earlier the murders, Barry Sherman asked his son, Jonathan Sherman, to repay him tens of millions of dollars that Jonathan had borrowed for his storage business concern. Jonathan explained this was to get his begetter through a difficult fiscal situation, and his male parent committed to future funding when Barry's finances improved. The two had a close relationship both professionally and personally.^[75]

Also mentioned as possibly having a motive to impale Sherman is Frank D'Angelo, given the long history between the two and the latter man's checkered legal history. In his interview with Bloomberg, he said "The worst thing that could have happened to Frank D'Angelo is Barry dying" and expressed regret that he had not been able to salvage a man he regarded as a close friend. He believed that "somebody came to make Barry an offering he couldn't reject, and he refused".^[17]

In Nov 2020, the Toronto police force said that they had identified a 'person of interest'; then two days afterwards clarified that it could exist one person, or multiple people.^[76]

On December 14, 2021, Toronto police released security camera footage of a suspect. In the roughly twenty-second video, a person dressed in dark clothing can be seen walking down a sidewalk on a snowfall-covered nighttime in the neighbourhood. "The timing of this individual's appearance is in line with when we believe the murders took place," Detective Brandon Cost told reporters. "Based on this prove we are classifying this individual every bit a doubtable."^[77]
